Although building a fence is one of the easiest projects that you can complete on your own, you will still be quite hard pressed to find a guide that tells you all you might need to know before you start one. This is because of the number of options that you have when building a fence.

There are dozens and dozens, possibly even hundreds of different kinds of fences, so no one can claim to be expert on each and every one. If you want to learn how to build a fence, you must first decide exactly which type it is that you wish to build.

If you are just looking for a way to separate your house from the houses of your neighbors, or to fence in your dog, or to fashionably enclose your property, and you live in a low crime, inhabited neighborhood, I would probably suggest building a picket fence. Building a fence of this type is easy, if time consuming.

You must simply hammer in the individual spine of wood, and then attach them together with a horizontal cross member. Then all you have to do is paint your fence and you are ready to go. Many residential communities have very strong and specific rules governing building a fence, so often the picket fence is your only option anyway.

On the other hand, if you are building a fence for security purposes, you might want to consider a few other options as well. Building a fashioned iron fence can be a way to get some security, while still preserving style. Although these types of fences are far from unbeatable, they are stronger than picket fences, and can be bought tall enough and sturdy enough to keep out most unwanted visitors. Many iron fences have point that is both decorative and useful, making them almost impossible to climb.

Although someone who is really determined to get into your house will no doubt find a way past this protection, building a fence of steel is enough to scare away most perpetrators. After all, the criminal are looking for an easy target. A more common option that combines the affordability of a wooden fence with the greater security of metal is a chain link fence. Building a fence out of chain link is easy, because it can be bought pre-made. All you have to do is to go under it into some concrete, and you are ready to go.

Mulch is often used as a topical layer on a spread of land. Its use varies, but it is generally applied to lawns for enhancing the visual appeal of the area. An application of this topical layer can conserve moisture and prevent growth of those indestructible weeds that are relentless on lawns across the country. Regardless of the use, adding mulch is a great idea because it improves fertility and adds to the overall health of the underlying soil.

When it comes to mulch, a variety of choices and options are available in nearly every home and garden supply store. Most of these products are usually organic, but also may be made from a variety of materials. This can include many colors and shapes of bark chips which are easily spread over the soil in any area, some include plastic sheeting to help protect from weed growth. These are generally applied to bare soil, or nearby existing plants. Mulches are sometimes also made of manure or compost. These organic types can be added naturally into the soil by the productivity of worms and other garden life.

Typically these topical layer lawn products are made from skids, pallets and varieties of recycled wood. All metals that might be contained in the wood are subject to a removal process that may vary slightly depending on the facility, and on the type of wood products being refined. Generally, most metals are removed by magnets and loaded into a separate processing facility to then be colored and dyed. Some of the wood will remain in its natural state, but for those that are dyed, an eco-friendly dying agent is used that will not harm any garden life or children that you may have frequenting your property. Other wood must be treated in order to be sold. This is done to prevent rotting or to rid the wood of previously used chemical coatings such as waterproofing agents or pesticides.

Mulch is usually available in several earthy colors to match any landscape. Colors are offered in red, gold, black and light and dark brown. When considering products for your lawn and property, several home and garden stores employ staff that are well trained to answer any questions that you may have concerning the type of mulch you should purchase. Though you may have an idea on how to use and spread the product, check with home and garden professionals to learn how to spread it onto your lawn efficiently and effectively, as all landscapes will vary considerably.
